On November 10, 2021, within the framework of “Culture and Society” seminar at the Center for History and Cultural Anthropology, Vladimir Gennadievich Shubin and Daria Andreevna Turyanitsa made a report on “Reminiscences of South Africans - members of the African National Congress (ANC) about their studies in the Soviet Union”. The presentation was based on an analysis of the memoirs of young South Africans who completed their studies or political training in the Soviet Union. The authors wondered how the young ANC cadres represented their stay in the USSR and how the acquired skills later influenced their careers. Despite a number of difficulties, most of the students recall with a great respect and gratitude the experience they received in the Soviet Union. According to the speakers, one of the main consequences of their stay was a serious evolution of the views of some South Africans, who experienced the spirit of internationalism and non-racialism.
