November 25, 2025 Report by Kupalov-Yaropolk A.I. as part of the scientific seminar “Culture and Society”

On November 25 at 12:00 PM, as part of the Culture and Society seminar at the Center for History and Cultural Anthropology, a report entitled “The Dynamics of Electoral Processes in the Republic of Mozambique 2014–2024: Global and Local Trends” was presented by Anton Kupalov-Yaropolk, a junior research fellow at the Center for History and Cultural Anthropology.

The author analyzed the results of the general elections in Mozambique in 2014, 2019 and 2024 and described the main changes in the socio-political situation in the provinces during the cycles under review. The key conclusion of the study is that two "generations" of active opposition are changing in the country at once. The traditional anti-government forces represented by RENAMO were unable to overcome the crisis after Afonso Dhlakama's departure in 2018, which affected the voting results and the loss of the main pool of the electorate. The deputies of the PODEMOS party, having won seats in parliament in 2025, switched from the positions of radical oppositionists to moderate ones and severed relations with their leader Venacio Mondlane.

Thus, at the moment there are no active opposition leaders in the political arena of Mozambique. The question of who will oppose Daniel Chapo in the 2029 elections remains open.
