Call for Papers

Dear Colleagues,

On June 25-26, 2020 in Yaroslavl the Laboratory of Oriental and African Studies of the Department of World History of P.G. Demidov Yaroslavl State University in cooperation with the Center for History and Cultural Anthropology of the Institute for African Studies (RAS) holds the Conference titled “AFRICA: POSTCOLONIAL DISCOURSE”, dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the continent from colonial dependence.

1960 went down in history as the “Year of Africa”. Seventeen countries of the continent were liberated from colonial dependence. Young states embarked on the road to sovereign development. In the context of globalization, mediatization, and digitalization, the young generation of Africans launched a cyberattack on stereotypes, mainly contributing to the actualization of postcolonial discourse. Edward Said initiated its development. In the book “Orientalism”, he set the goal to release science and culture from the domination of Eurocentrism.

Topics for discussion:

    • decolonization of Africa;
    African integration into the global political, economic, and virtual space;
    • establishment and development of African studies in Africa and beyond;
    • colonial and postcolonial discourses;
    • updating African studies methodology;
    • evolution of African identity;
    • Afrocentrism (in opposition to Eurocentrism);
    • the intellectual history of Africa and the African diaspora;
    • problems of historical and cultural memory;
    • formation of transcultural modernity and the emergence of Afropolitanism;
    • African literature development: postcolonial narratives;
    • the language situation in Africa;
    • source study of the history of Africa and the African diaspora;
    • Historiography of the history of Africa and the African diaspora;
    • African countries and peoples in the digital age;
    • Africa in the system of international relations;
    • Africa-Russia: Horizons of cooperation in the 21st century.

The deadline for paper proposals (in the form of abstracts within 500 words) is April 10, 2020. The proposals should be sent to tanja1994@mail.ru.

In connection with the coronavirus pandemic, the conference will be held online on the Zoom platform on June 25-26, 2020, beginning at 10.00
